Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SBA loan?

An SBA loan is a business loan partially guaranteed by the US Small Business Administration. Because the government backs a portion of the loan, approved lenders can offer lower rates and longer terms than they otherwise would. You still borrow from a private lender the SBA just reduces their risk.

The SBA 7(a) is the most common program flexible use of funds, up to $10M. The SBA 504 is specifically for purchasing real estate or large equipment, with fixed rates and terms up to 25 years. Most small businesses start with a 7(a).

From application to funding, expect 2 to 4 weeks for a standard 7(a). SBA Express loans (up to $500K) can be approved in 36 hours, though funding still takes several days after approval.

For loans over $25,000, the SBA requires lenders to take available collateral. This is typically business assets first equipment, inventory, real estate. Personal assets may be required if business assets are insufficient.

A 620 FICO may qualify for some SBA programs, particularly Microloans (up to $50K). For standard 7(a) loans, a 680+ score gives you the best approval odds. We show you which programs fit your profile before you apply.

The SBA excludes lenders, passive investment companies, gambling businesses, multi-level marketing companies, and certain nonprofits. Most operating small businesses qualify.
